Southern California Camellia Society monthly meetings (*except October 22, 2016 and March 16, 2017) will take place on the third Thursday at 7 pm at the Los Angeles County Arboretum, 301 North Baldwin Ave., Arcadia, CA 91007. Unless indicated otherwise, the meetings will be in Ayres Hall (the exhibition building entered through the gate midway in the parking area facing Baldwin Ave.) except the Saturday, October 22, 2016 meeting which will be in the “Bamboo” room.
At several of the meetings Brad King, the President of the SCCS, will give a brief camellia Power Point presentation illustrated with images of beautiful camellias. Please see below for details.
Refreshments will be served at all the meetings and all are encouraged to bring such to share. A plant raffle of one and two gallon camellia plants will be held at each meeting with a nominal fee for raffle tickets.
*October 22nd Special Saturday morning meeting in the Bamboo Room – 10am: Welcome back all! Joe and Linda Tunner of Encinitas will give a culture session with photos of their many camellia successes. A Q&A will follow the presentation.
November 17th: Don Bergamini, former President of the ACS and a Northern California grower of prominence, will give a presentation on the 2016 International Camellia Congress meeting and tours held in China in February 2016. Don & Mary, his wife, will have many photos to share.
December: No Meeting.
January 19th: Tom Nuccio of Nuccios’ Nurseries will bring many Nuccios’ varieties and new introductions. Some of these plants will be donated for the raffle. Always informative session not to be missed.
February 16th: Dan Charvet, camellia hybridizer, will travel from his nursery in Fort Bragg, CA, to present his latest successes finding camellias resistant to petal blight and other common camellia diseases. Dan has many plants not usually seen in SoCal. Dan has twice given very informative presentations in the past.
*March 16th at the Huntington Gardens, Prompt Start time of 6:30 p.m. DST: David MacLaren, curator of the Huntington Gardens camellia collection and a SCCS Board Member, will conduct a walking tour of the recently expanded Chinese Garden area as well as some of the other Huntington camellia collections. This tour will start promptly at 6:30 p.m. to accommodate seeing the collections in the daylight. A business meeting in the Huntington Education Center will follow the tour.
April 21st: End of year meeting to elicit comments and evaluations regarding the 2016-17 meeting programs and the shows. This is a specifically social gathering to include food items to be determined. Brad King’s presentation will highlight some of the winning blooms for the 2017 camellia show season.
